Get Involved: Volunteers

As word spreads about Tetra's services, so does the demand on our volunteers. We receive hundreds of requests each year in communities that do not currently have a chapter. The need for our services is growing and we are looking for volunteers to help out in their community. If you are interested in starting a new chapter, fill in our request form here.

As a member of Tetra's  Technical Volunteer team, you will assist people with significant disabilities achieve an enriched quality of life by creating innovative, commercially unavailable assistive devices. Find out more about this exciting opportunity below.

Tetra Technical Volunteer Position Description

Mission

Tetra Society of North America is an independent charitable society dedicated to assisting people with significant disabilities achieve an enriched quality of life within the community.

Position

As a member of Tetra’s Technical Volunteer team, you will assist people with significant disabilities achieve an enriched quality of life by creating innovative, commercially unavailable assistive devices.

Responsible to: Chapter Coordinator

Responsibilities

Attend initial orientation session

bullet

Participate in monthly Volunteer Project Meetings

bullet

Meet with Tetra member to discuss project requirements, in the presence of third-party member (friend, family member, caregiver, etc.)

bullet

Design and build an assistive device or adaptation solution based on identified member requirements, within pre-determined timeline

bullet

Follow safety guidelines established by Tetra

bullet

Make adjustments to assistive device as necessary, until both member and volunteer are satisfied with results and function

bullet

Provide documentation of project solution, providing detailed diagrams/photographs, wherever possible

bullet

Present project solutions at Volunteer Project Meeting

bullet

Submit detailed list of expenses and receipts to Chapter Coordinator for reimbursement

Position Requirements

bullet

Background in engineering, technology, architecture, or related discipline

bullet

Understanding and support of Tetra’s mission, values, and operating parameters

bullet

Willingness to participate in Tetra’s screening measures, including an interview, reference checks, and police records check

bullet

Excellent communication skills

bullet

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Time Commitment

Because each member’s request is unique, time required for each project varies. Each project requires approximately 12+.hours/month.
