Wheelchair Braking System
| Challenge: |
Amanda and her father Mark regularly compete in road
races, including a Boston Marathon. They purchased a new racing
wheelchair, but found that the braking system was inadequate. The
original brakes work only on the small front wheel, and were not
sufficient to slow the chair sufficiently when necessary. |
| Solution: |
A wooden bar was fitted to the chair frame so that
it could contact the rear wheels, and connected to the existing
brake lever. Activating the brake brings the bar into contact with
the rear wheels, slowing the chair much more effectively than
before. |
