Wheelchair Brake Extensions
| Challenge: |
This project was done for a client who uses a wheelchair. This client
was able to propel his wheelchair along flat ground, but due to a
limited range of movement had difficulty applying the brakes. In the
past, he was able to use long handled commercially available brake
extensions, but due to decreased arm mobility, this was no longer an
option. The client needed an adaptation to his chair that would fit his
individual need. |
| Solution: |
A Tetra volunteer bent aluminum tubing and placed it over the
original brake control stick. The bottom end was flattened to ensure a
snug fit. This extended the brake control about 5" higher and also
5" back from the original position, allowing the client to easily
apply the brakes. |
