Walker/Wheelchair Combination

Challenge: A continuing care home had a problem keeping a resident safe from falls while allowing her unrestricted movement throughout the facility and outdoors. The walker she was using was too unstable and unwieldy to maintain her safety.
Solution:

A volunteer from Vancouver was asked to take on the challenge of designing a variation of the current walker. The solution was to modify a standard wheelchair to serve as both a wheelchair and a walker at the same time. The modifications included securing 2-4 inch aluminum dowels on each side of the chair (at arm and seat level) to secure extension arms to the existing wheelchair frame. The chair's front wheels were removed and 2 new 5" locking wheels were attached to the extension. A strap was attached to the seat and the extension to create a safety device.

The modified chair now serves as a walker/wheelchair providing stability for the client and a convenient seat to rest on when she becomes tired.
