Specialized Table and Chairs for Home and School
| Challenge: |
Clare is five years old and has a spinal condition
that requires her to be seated at school and home in specialized
furniture. The commercially available products did not completely
suit Clare's needs. The Tetra volunteer determined the best action
to be fabrication of furniture pieces designed and built to her
specific requirements. |
| Solution: |
The chair legs, arms and seat are fully adjustable.
The seat can move to position Clare closer to her work surface as
required. As she has a tendency to bring her head back quickly,
the adjustable headrest was also added.
The seat adjustment, headrest portions and a securing strap are
accessories not typically found in these types of chairs. The desk
had several design features that were not available in
commercially produced versions.
Material costs to the client were in the order of $300 for the
three pieces of furniture. Commercial chairs of generic design are
typically in the order of $1200 per unit.
