Modified Snow Sled
| Challenge: |
Lauren is from Florenceville and has cerebral palsy. Her
mother, Susan contacted the Fredericton Chapter of Tetra to request some
modifications to a Step 2 sled she had purchased for Lauren for
Christmas. The sled was the right size for Lauren, but lacked the
required backrest and seat belts for Lauren's needs. Lauren had been
using the sled during outdoor recess and lunch at her school, but
required another child to sit behind her to hold her in place. |
| Solution: |
Tetra Fredericton volunteers, Melanie Lalonde, P.Eng., and Jean
Frederic Lalonde, P.Eng., a husband and wife team, offered to take on
the project. Within a week, they managed to gather together the
materials which included a plywood backrest, a donated back brace and
strapping, and some miscellaneous hardware. Susan brought the sled to
Fredericton on the next weekend, Melanie and Frederic completed the
modifications, and Susan returned home with the modified sled later that
day! Lauren wanted to try the sled out as soon as she saw it.
Susan later upholstered the backrest with some black vinyl for the
finishing touches.
