Modified Children's Vehicle

Challenge:

Lindsay is a young girl with cerebral palsy who wanted to ride her new Big Foot kid's car but because she has limited coordination, the built in steering wheel was too difficult to manipulate. Lindsay also needed a specialized seat that would be able to support her body and still distribute the weight evenly in the cab of the vehicle. Lindsay's parents also wanted a way to stop the vehicle in the event that Lindsay lost control.

Solution:

Tetra volunteer Russ Weir in Columbus Ohio replaced the steering wheel with a joystick so that Lindsay could manage a better grip. A plastic platform was built around the joystick to support her arms as she steered. A molded children's carrier seat was attached to the cab of the truck in order to support this young girl's body.

The electronic components of the vehicle were modified to respond to the joystick's movements and a special remote kill switch was installed so that Lindsay's parents could stop the vehicle in an emergency. Russ also managed to lower the speed of vehicle so that the family could follow along at a comfortable walking pace.
