Laser Pointer

Challenge: A young boy with Cerebral Palsy used a laser pointer on a headband as a means of communication at home and at school. Unfortunately the Surrey School Board had banned the use of laser pointers in schools because of the potential for harm to other students and staff.
Solution:

After investigating several options, a Vancouver volunteer designed a modified laser prototype to test for the school board. The laser beam's intensity was decreased by using a filter, thereby increasing the safety factor for the other students and staff. The adapted laser point was inserted into an aluminum tube that attached to the child's headband.

The modified pointer was approved by the school board and the design was consequently used as a model for other pointers used in the school system.
