Bathroom Counter Adaptations

Challenge:

The existing modified townhouse for wheelchair access was retrofitted with counter tops in the bathroom with open access below, yet due to Ron’s height from knee to floor he would have to lift his legs off of the bottom foot rest to gain access. This was done from both his morning care in a commode chair and during the day from his wheelchair. Again during the day, if no shoes where on there was limited access and often rubbed on the top of knees causing sores on his skin.

Solution:

The face plates of the counter which prevented access under the bathroom sink was arched out. Due to the electrical outlet on the right side it could not be centered, yet enough room to gain access under the sink and hang the hair dryer on the left side where compensated for.

The exposed cut under side was painted with white paint to seal the wood.
