Adjustable Lounger

Challenge: A client with fibromyalgia needed a lounger that raised and lowered so that she could get in and out easily. It had to be comfortable enough for her to recline and to operate a computer keyboard from that position.
Solution:

To solve this problem, the project volunteer used one of the client's own chairs. Threaded rods were installed in the hollow back legs of the chair. These rods were connected by chains and sprockets to a reversing variable speed hand drill. The trigger mechanism was detached and fitted to a cord for ease of operation with micro switches on the chair to limit the upper and lower range of travel.

The chair required only a few a minor adjustment for the client's use. She was able to spend more time comfortably on her computer and consequently more time at her career.
